Birth Story

This is Brenton's birth story written on the evening of his first day of life.

Brenton arrived via c section at 9:16am. He is a big boy at 9lbs 10oz 23 inches long. Like all new moms I am in love with him. He nurses like a champ and that has really helped us bond. He is so calm and I feel so calm in his presence and we are helping each other find our way. I am so grateful for my family. My husband is amazing already as he also settles into fatherhood.

Now the straight talk birth story...I was so reluctant to have a c section. They told me he would be big and worried about shoulder dystocia. I was so sad about losing the chance to labor and deliver him naturally like we planned. I mourned the loss of that experience and moved on to acceptance.

The process of the c section was very fast paced even thoigh it was scheduled. Lots of pre op visitors and something my nurse called a list of attrocities which really amused me. She was older with a young trainee with her...together the perfect pair for me. The list was an iv, catheter, a shave and a horrible anti nausea medicine that tastes so terrible its ironic.

So my husband puts on his space suit scrubs and we are off to the OR. I go in first and get the spinal which was really crazy. The anesthesiologist was quite high spirited and made me feel on edge but the nurses were great. My midwife was with me the whole time. She is the best. Held my hand and walked me through the procedure.

Things I did not expect...two floods of emotion. The first was when they laid me on the table. Just the whole enormity was overwhelming and then when I heard his first bubbling cries. Another unexpected thing was how the procedure felt physically. Of course I felt no pain but it was more than pressure. I felt them working on me and imagined what they were doing and of course the midwife kept me posted too. It was a surreal experience actually. I did shake...a lot!!! They put a warm blankets on me at one point.

Hearing the first cries was amazing and they lowered the drape for me to glimpse him for a moment. Then it was my husband over with the baby while they did all the assessments. Then family time and I snuggled his face and touched him as much as I could. Then the hard part begins when they take him away.

My husband left with the baby and they closed me up. Then I was off to recovery and I waited and waited until they returned finally after what felt like an eternity. He has not left my side since. He met his maternal grandparents and two of our closest friends and his aunt and cousins. This lucky guy is feeling the love from all. He is so big and handsome.

I have been up and sat in a chair for a while. The pain is not bad at all. My belly is tender. The itching is terrible however. If you have a c section bring a back scratcher just in case. My hubby scratches it but it would be nice to be able to do it myself sometimes. I had a few doses of benadryl but honestly it just made me drowsy. I did take a little nap while he slept as well and my husband got some food.

Now I am just staring at my boy wondering how the rest of this will go and just feeling happy about it all even though it did not go as originally planned. I am the luckiest girl in the world!
